Pharoah Rush led Marina to a 34-25 victory over Laguna Hills Thursday night.
A look at some of the best and some of the worst from the football games that OC Sports Zone covered last week.
Best name for a running back: Pharoah Rush of Marina. And he had quite a game, rushing for 196 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Vikings past Laguna Hills 34-25.
Second best performance by a running back: Crean Lutheran sophomore Nolan Folsom had 181 yards on 13 carries and two touchdowns, leading the Saints to a 38-14 victory over California Military Institute.
Best performance by a quarterback: Not much doubt about this one. Corona del Mar quarterback Ethan Garbers threw a career-high six touchdown passes to lead CdM to a 59-6 victory over El Toro. He wound up throwing for 277 yards.
Best receiver of the week: Brandon Krause of Fountain Valley had a big game, hauling in 11 catches for 148 yards and a TD to help the Barons defeat Woodbridge 35-20.
Top defensive player of the week: Foothill’s Justin Krantz had seven tackles, two sacks and a deflection in the Knights 30-6 victory over Beckman.
Best start by a team you don’t hear much about: Crean Lutheran is 3-0 heading into Friday’s game with Beckman at Tustin. The Saints are trying to prepare for the rugged Empire League.
Best comeback of the week: The Godinez football team fell behind 22-0 and rallied for a 28-22 victory over Portola, handing the Bulldogs their first varsity loss.
Best uniforms of the week: Those Marina Vikings’ home uniforms with yellow jerseys and blue pants were pretty unique.
Second best uniforms of the week: The Woodbridge Warriors brought out their all-black uniforms for the game against Fountain Valley last week. Woodbridge normally wears all red at home.
But Coach Rick Gibson said he left it up to the players to decide which game they could wear the all-black uniforms. It was either last week’s game or homecoming, and they voted to wear them for last week’s game.
Woodbridge will be back in red this week when it hosts Pacifica Friday at 7 p.m. at University.
Best coach of the week: Fountain Valley’s Jimmy Nolan brings a lot of enthusiasm to games and win or lose, he always entertains reporters. Nolan has the Barons off to a 3-0 start and there is lots of excitement at Fountain Valley.
We’ve got more football coverage planned tonight on OC Sports Zone. We hope you will tell your friends. Our site is free for readers and we have a scoreboard at the top of our site for updates.
