Irvine High School’s girls flag football team, coached by Madison Krusmark, opened the season Wednesday night with a 6-0 victory over Dana Hills.

“We have expanded our team to 26 total athletes so we are fielding a varsity and JV this year,” Krusmark said.

The coach said Irvine was 1-10 in its first season.

The Vaqueros are led by returning players sophomore Midori de Los Santos and junior Emily Angel.

“We are excited for our returners to get to show the hard work they have put in in the off-season. Both Midori and Emily are multi-sport athletes playing flag football and softball,” Krusmark said. “Midori is a slot receiver who has incredible speed. Emily is a wide receiver who is best known for her crisp routes and hands. This year, Emily is a captain on the team and is used to set the example in our drills during practice. She is also speedy fast with a 5.4 40-yard dash.

“Both athletes are extremely competitive with both themselves and their opponents and are critical to our success this year.”

In Wednesday’s game, senior Angela Rodriguez, de Los Santos, senior Malak Alashqar and senior Ariana La Grass led the Vaqueros.

“La Grass scored our very first touchdown of the season,” Krusmark said.
