Newport Harbor’s football team built a 14-point halftime lead and went on to defeat Sunny Hills 38-28 in the opening round of the CIF Division 6 playoffs Friday night at Newport Harbor.
The Sailors (4-7) advance into the quarterfinals against the winner of the Campbell Hall-Santa Barbara game.
AJ Guitron-Moore threw three first-half touchdowns and Hayden Farley scored the deciding TD on an 80-yard run to lift the Sailors.
Newport Harbor led 35-28 after three quarters.
Sunny Hills finished 7-4.
