The Northwood girls water polo team improved its record to 7-2 overall and started 2019 with a hard fought 5-3 league Pacific Coast League victory over Woodbridge Wednesday.

After taking a 3-0 lead, the Timberwolves (2-1 in league) were held scoreless for two quarters until they scored two goals in the last quarter.

Junior Hannah Miller led the attack with two goals, while freshmen Lauren Nguyen and Mia Tomovic each had one goal.

Senior Co-Captain Amanda Nguyen also had one goal and had an impressive defensive game with a team-leading four steals.

Freshman Sanjana Venkatesh had another impressive game with 10 saves. She has 109 saves for the season.

“We knew this would be a hard game, especially since it’s our first game coming off of the holiday break,” said Northwood Coach Kyle Kim-E. “Holding a tough Woodbridge team to three goals was perfect defensively, but I thought that we could have scored more on offense.

“What was promising, however, was that we created a lot of good offensive opportunities. Now, we need to focus on finishing these shots. For the first game of 2019, I think we performed well. Of course, there are some small things here and there to fine tune but that will come in time.”
